Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet
Ladies!! This is such a fabulous idea! I am very excited! Well, my first recommendation is The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. Absolutely wonderful. It was published in 1989 and is historical fiction about the building of a cathedral in Kingsbridge, England. Soo good. Make sure you start it when you have time to read...you will not want to put it down!

so after i found out that this book was an "oprah club" book, i decided to give it a try...and because you said it was good too :) i have to say, it took me a bit to get into it, i thought the beginning was a little slow, i think just because of the time period it was set in took a little getting adjusted to, but by the halfway point i was hooked and i read the last 200 pages in one sitting, i couldn't put it down. i liked the whole good vs evil aspect and having the story play out from a couple different view points. i have the sequel on hold at the library, so i can't wait to read that one now!
